Hockey On Your Block
HOCKEY ON YOUR BLOCK launched its first season in 2011 and since then has served thousands of children and families in the greater Chicago area. As part of the National Hockey League’s (NHL) Hockey is for Everyone Initiative, we are a non-profit organization for girls and boys ages 5 to 14. Hockey is for Everyone™ uses the game of hockey – and the League’s global influence – to drive positive social change and foster more inclusive communities.
Learning to play hockey can help your child learn and grow in all aspects of life. Playing hockey helps improve children’s physical fitness while strengthening their mental health, encouraging leadership behaviors, fostering character development, achieve success through teamwork, and teaching important life lessons.
About the Program
Our FREE youth hockey program provides weekly ice time, full equipment, opportunities to play competitive games against other youth hockey teams and a dedicated USA Hockey certified coaching staff. Practice plans follow USA Hockey’s American Development Model (ADM) to maximize player participation and development.
Learn to Skate
The Learn to Skate program is designed to welcome students with no prior ice skating or hockey experience to the rink environment. This 10-12 week program will focus on basic skating concepts so that students may learn to improve their balance and coordination on the ice while learning how to skate. After completing the Learn to Skate program, students will progress to the Learn to Play program.
Learn to Play
After completing the Learn to Skate Program, students will join the Learn to Play program where they will be introduced to basic hockey skills such as shooting, passing, and stickhandling, while continuing to develop their skating skills. Students will begin to participate in small-area games as they continue their overall development into hockey players. Each student will have the opportunity to progress at their own pace and will remain in Learn to Play until their coach recommends that they progress to the Team Chicago competitive youth hockey team.
Team Chicago
After completing our Learn to Skate and Learn to Play programs, students will progress to the Team Chicago youth hockey team where they’ll continue to further develop their on-ice skills while participating in competitive games against local youth hockey teams for the first time. Students who are part of Team Chicago will attend regular practices throughout the year to continue improving their hockey skills.
